Wild cherry, or chokecherry, produces an acrid, astringent bark that is antitussive, sedative, and carminative. Generally recommended for coughs, asthma, and GI tract problems, wild cherry bark affects the lungs, spleens, and pancreas. Its biochemical composition includes hydrocyanic glycoside, isoamygdalin, organic acids, and tannin.
Wild cherry bark calms the respiratory nerves, allays cough and asthma. It is also excellent for digestive weakness including ulcers, gastritis, colitis, diarrhea and dysentery.
The inner bark is best collected, dried and aged in the fall. This is one herb that is best extracted in cool water by macerating an ounce of the bark to a pint of water overnight and then warming slightly. Sustained high heat does diminish its cough-relieving properties.
A good syrup useful for most kinds of coughs, including spasmodic and whooping coughs, is made by combining wild cherry bark, elecampane root, cramp bark and one-quarter part lobelia herb and ginger root with a base of honey. Take as often as needed.
