General Information on Artemesia spp.
Few genera of hardy plants have such a range of aromatic properties and hence offer such a variety of uses to the herbalist, to the perfumer or to the gardener who merely enjoys an extension of the senses by crushing a leaf as he passes. Several are invaluable "ever-greys" for edging or for knot garden filling. Only Artemesia lactiflora has much beauty of flower (rather like a white golden rod) but this has no herbal properties. Otherwise the floral effect is in greyish sprays made up of insignificant rayless daisies.
But it is the foliage which is their major garden virtue, in varying shades of grey from the sage green-greys of old man (or lad's love) and Artemisia pontica to the near whites of A. stelleriana, A. canescens and A. ludoviciana. All but the last have deeply divided filigree leaves, lovely in the mass or in undivided stems for flower arrangement use.
As might be expected, such greyness is an indication of adaptation to hot dry places and good drainage is an essential part of their cultivation.
The biggest, A. arborescens, is a magnificent grey-white sub-shrub from Crete where, on the limestone cliffs above Souda Bay, it makes great heaps 4 feet high. It grows very quickly in Britain but is only for warm spots: generally it is a good London garden plant maintaining an air of distinction even against the ceaseless traffic at Hyde Park Corner. In the oasis-like air of Chelsea Physic Garden it is superb. Seedlings seem to offer a range of hardiness; some will not survive a first winter - those that do are worth every effort to maintain. The new hybrid 'Powis Castle' is even better.
Close to it in effect, and perfectly hardy are Mrs Fish's selections of Artemisia absinthiurn; "Lambrook Silver" is for general use - about 3 feet high - with "Lambrook Giant" when a bigger plant is wanted. Both are lovely and invaluable garden plants. "Lambrook Silver", with purple flag irises, catmint and Alchemilla mollis is a superb association for early summer herb garden effect.
Herbally Arternisia absinthium is used for flavouring various cordials, vermouths and, of course, specifically absinthe, that fin de siècle brew apparently essential to the Parisian world of La Bohéme. Absinthe, of course, makes the heart grow fonder.
Southernwood, A. abrotanum, is another highly aromatic member. It makes a 2-foot high bush of woody stems, most of which indeed do survive the winter. A tidier plant is obtained if it is cut back by half each spring and if, also, the insignificant flower sprays are removed as they develop. Grown thus, in light soil and a sunny spot, southemwood makes an admirable low hedge in the manner of Santolina. A pair planted each side of a seat, as if they were the supporters on a coat of arms, are well placed for the appreciation. of their scent. Pleasant to us, it used to be employed, as a substitute to mothballs, to keep insects out of clothes. Its other country name, lad's love, refers to its optimistic use as an aphrodisiac.
As well as being aromatic the smaller grey artemisias are invaluable for foliage effect in the border. At around 18 inches high they are front row plants, tumbling forward over paving or gravel, a perfect foil to spring or autumn bulbs. Nerines, dwarf cyelamens arid coichicums are particularly good associates. A. stelleriana has the virtue of remaining evergreen (or grey) in most winters.
Sometimes, however, beauty being only skin deep, a plant which would never be given house-room aesthetically is essential. Such a one is Artmeisia dracunculus, French tarragon. The true plant, towards 2 feet high, with narrow pale green leaves and miserable sprays of rayless daiaies, possesses an utterly distinct scent queerly compounded of anise and liquorice. Classically used in poulet à l'estragon, its flavouring is always of interest, cooked or raw.
Strangely, French tarragon is neither easy to obtain nor to grow. It needs a warm sunny spot and resents being overgrown with other things. Frequent propagation and replanting in new soil seems to help. But a major problem is its almost complete resemblance to a virtually useless relation A. dracunculoides, whose scent and flavouring capabilities are almost nil. If one's "French Tarragon" grows vigorously into an ever-spreading clump of 3-foot high stems then without doubt it is the Russian tarragon. Except in Botanic Gardens whose collections aim at comprehensiveness all herb gardens would do well to dispose of the Russian plant, lest it overwhelms its more delicate cousin from the West. | |
