Although pharmacologists find no basis for the use of centaury as an antidote, they have substantiated other traditional applications of this plant - its use to stimulate the appetite and to relieve gas pains. Centaury, they have discovered, contains a substance (called erythrocentaurin) that stimulates the flow of saliva and gastric juices and the secretion of bile by the liver.
A tea brewed from centaury flowers will perk up a flagging appetite, aid digestion, ease an attack of heartburn, and may even mitigate the sufferings of jaundice in certain cases; it will, however, cause nausea if taken in excess. Because the chemicals in centaury are extremely bitter, herbalists recommend mixing the tea with sweeter herbs. Another method has been to take the herb in the form of vermouth, a popular aperitif wine in whose recipe it figures.
A tea brewed from the dried flowering plant serves as an appetite stimulant and carminative (a substance that expels intestinal and stomach gas). Scientific studies have confirmed that both of these uses of the plant are valid. Centaury is an ingredient of vermouth. The plant was once recognized as a drug in the National Formulary, a reference book for pharmacists.
General Herb Information
Humanity first learned the use of medicinal plants, said the storytellers of ancient Greece, from the centaur Chiron, half man, half horse. When he was wounded by a poisoned arrow, this sage monster cured himself with a pretty blue wildflower, and in his honor - so the story goes - the plant was named centaury.
Habitat: Moist meadows, fields, waste places.
Range: Native to Europe, centaury is naturalized from Quebec to Michigan, south to Georgia and Indiana, and, in the West, from northwestern California north to Washington and east to Idaho.
Identification: An annual or biennial 4-20 inches tall. A branched stem rises from a basal rosette of leaves. Each branch bears pairs of lance-shaped leaves. Five-petaled rose-purple flowers (July - August) are borne in dense, flat-topped clusters.
