Jean Valnet, a notable contemporary French herbalist, has described cabbage as "the medicine of the poor" and it is probably one of the most widely used household remedies in folk tradition. The leaves have been used as anti-inflammatory poultices to relieve complaints ranging from arthritis to mastitis, while cabbage lotions were once a regular household standby for skin problems. Juices and infusions are used to treat a range of digestive problems including stomach ulcers.
The cabbage has been cultivated in the West since at least 400 BC, while in the second century AD the Greek herbalist Dioscorides considered it as a digestive remedy, joint tonic and cooling preparation for skin problems and fevers. Raw cabbage eaten before meat was reckoned to prevent drunkenness by over-indulgent Romans.
In Germany, sauerkraut, a fermented cabbage mixture, is regarded as preventative for rheumatism, gout and premature aging. The fresh leaves can be used directly on inflammations (simply soften them with a vegetable mallet secure with a loose bandage or sticking plaster), while a useful lotion for acne can be made by combination of cabbage leaves and distilled witch hazel in a food processor - chop enough cabbage leaves to fill about a third to a half of the processor, then cover them with witch hazel and blend to produce the right consistency.
Cabbage juice is also commercially available.

Do you know about how much Indole-3-Carbinol would be contained in each 4500 mg capsule? Would you know the approximate amount of raw cabbage one would have to eat to equal the amount of extract contained in a single capsule? Thank you, Bill

For a measurable and guaranteed quantity of Indole-3-Carbinol, you may wish to try this product by NOW. A typical cabbage contains about 1200 mg of Indole-3-Carbinol. Taking two 200 mg capsules of NOW Indole-3-Carbinol three times daily (1200 mg total) would be the equivalent of getting a full head of cabbage worth of Indole-3-Carbinol. That of course is assuming that the body can absorb each in equal amounts. It may be that the cabbage offers a more easily absorbable form of I3C than the extracted compound, not to mention the benefits of all the other substances present in the cabbage plus additional fiber. The NOW product also includes flaxseed lignan to support normal healthy hormonal balance.
Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
