In the seldom-admired rocky glade where few plants bloom in splendor, a native American member of the mint family resides, flaunting a soft spray of lavender blooms in the transitory summer-weathered days of late spring. This plant begs for a place in herb gardens.
Botanists have been confused by its plethora of names and ranks including Satureja glabra (Nutt.) Fern., Satureja glabella (Michx.) Briq var. angustifolia (Tori.) Svenson, Clinopodium glabrum Ktze., Calamintha Nuttallii Benth., Calamintha glabella var;Nuttallii Gary, Micromeria Nuttallii Torr., Micromeria glabella var; angustifolia Torr., Hedeoma glabra Nutt. (where it all started), and the name we're going to use, Satureja arkansana.
Botanists do agree, however, on several points about this plant. Its leaves are glabrous or smooth, they are narrow (angustifolia), and it was first described by naturalist Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) who encountered this pennyroyal-like plant, "upon the banks of the St. Lawrence and the upper lakes" and on calcareous rocks at Niagara Falls.
Calamint, a perennial native to the eastern United States and south central Canada, occurs from Minnesota to Ontario, western New York, south to Arkansas and Texas and grows in limestone glades, and on banks of streams, moist ledges of limestone bluffs, and escarpments. The plant stands only six to twelve inches tall. The leaves are smooth, with upright branching flower stems. They are one-half inch long or less, oblong, linear, en- tire (no teeth), and peppered with oil glands. The gaping almost inquisitive-looking, two-lipped flowers occur in clusters starting halfway up the stems. Flowers are a bluish- lavender color about one-eighth to one-fourth inch long. Like European pennyroyal Mentha pulegium, calamint sends out root-runners after blooming.
Thickly growing calamint brushes the calves of bare legs like seeding grasses. Stroke the leaves and the surrounding air explodes with a sweet pennyroyal-like fragrance.
Propagate by dividing the runners in spring or late summer after it has finished blooming. Calamint likes a limey, gravelly soil with good drainage. It prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade. A group planting of calamint makes a soft-textured mid-summer border.
The individual blossoms make a colorful and spicy addition to salads. A tea of the flowering herb has a pennyroyal flavor. It is diaphoretic and soothes an upset stomach.
