Description: Lungwort is a hairy, bristly perennial herb of up to 0.3 m in height, with large, oval leaves dotted with white spots. The tubular flowers are borne in small clusters and turn from red to blue as they mature. It is interesthg to note that the herb was used against lung diseases in former times, because the spotted leaves resemble diseased lungs ("doctrine of signatures").
Origin: Europe. The plant is commonly cultivated.
Parts Used: Leaves (Pulmonariae herba).
Therapeutic Category: Expectorant.
Uses and Properties: Lungwort is mainly used in folk medicine and as a medicinal herb it is nowawadays considered to be mostly of historical interest. It is, however, still used as an expectorant and is sometimes utilised in case of ailments of the gastrointestinal and urinary tract. Externally, the herb is applied in case of haemorrhoids and wounds.
Preparation and Dosage: A tea is prepared from 1.5 g of the finely chopped herb. It is sweetened sith honey and taken as a bronchial tea in small sips several times a day.
Active Ingredients: The herb contains mucilage, flavonoids (O-glycosides of kaempferol and quercetin), 4% catecholtannins, 2% gallotannins, up to 5% silicic acid and up to 1.2% allantoin (this compound is also present in Symphytum officinale and other members of the family Boraginaceae). It has been suggested that Pulmonaria, like other Boraginaceae, may contain potentially toxic pyrrohzidine alkaloids. In a careful screening of plant material from different localities, no pyrrolizidine alkaloids could be detected.
Pharmacological Effects: The demulcent effects may be due to mucilage and the diuretic effect to flavonoids and siicic acid. Allantoin helps to destroy necrotic tissue and enhances tissue proliferation and the formation of new epithelia. It is therefore used to treat wounds and burns, ulcers and eczema. The presence of allantoin may provide a rationale for the healing effects when the herb is applied topically but there is not yet any scientific support for the numerous other folk uses.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.
Formerly used for lung diseases, this plant is no longer used today. In its youth it is demulcent and mucilaginous. In the country it was once used in association with red cabbage, white onions and calf's lights. Later in its development, it is an astringent.
