Nature of Plant: Grown mostly for its long fleshy root; decumbent nature permits the 4-foot-long stems to lie on the ground; in second year flowers like spikes of tiny yellow stars, rise from joints in stem; rough, spiny leaves and stems.
Spacing of Mature Plants: 10 inches.
Cultural Requirements: Light, sandy soil; prefers sun; puts out underground runners profusely.
Uses
Root: (Medicinal) Deobstruent; (Industrial) depending upon what mordant is used, will dye turkey red, pink, lilac, purple, brown, orange, black.
Leaf and Stem: (Industrial) Spiny nature of the whorls of leaves and stems has made them useful in polishing metal work.
