Description
Sarsaparilla is a climbing vine native to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Brazil, with spiky, heart-shaped leaves. The root is a popular flavoring agent in carbonated soft drinks and is used in teas. Despite the long history of use, however, Commission E put the plant on its list of unapproved herbs. It's a controversial decision.
Potential Health Benefits
Sarsaparilla's champions say it can increase energy; act as a diuretic and laxative, and help bring down high blood pressure. In Germany, sarsaparilla has also been used to treat skin diseases such as psoriasis as well as kidney diseases, but Commission E concluded that "The claimed efficacy has not been documented" for treating these maladies.
Scientific Evidence
Sarsaparilla contains vitamins A and D and minerals such as sulfur and zinc, plus the steroid-like substances saporin, sarsapogenin, and smilagenin.
In a monograph published in 1990, Commission E concluded that the herb can cause gastric distress and temporary kidney dysfunction. Seven years later, one commission member disagreed, suggesting that the doses used had been too high. Most North American herbalists consider the plant safe.
Dosage
Dried root, 2 to 4 grams two to three times per day as a decoction; liquid extract (1:1, 50 percent ethanol), 2 to 4 milliliters two to three times a day.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Stomach upset, kidney dysfunction, and, Commission E warns, "increased or decreased action of [other] herbs taken simultaneously." Given the long and widespread use of this herb, we believe there's cause to debate the commission's low opinion of sarsaparilla.
