Description
Spectacular as the flowers are, it is the root or rhizome of the Florentine iris that is the valuable part of the plant. The name orris derives from the Greek word for rainbow, indicating the range of flower colors.
History
Orris root originates from southern Europe, and became naturalized in Iran and northern India. It has been identified in a wall painting of an Egyptian temple dating from 1500 BC. It was at one time used as a purgative, but is not now commonly used medicinally.
Characteristics
The long and slender plant grows to a height of 36 inches, while its straight, fleshy, and erect stems are wrapped in long, pointed, sword-shaped leaves. The flowers are about 4 inches across and may be white, tinged with mauve or with a yellow beard. The bulbous and fleshy rhizome is white under the skin and smells strongly of violets. The plant has small fibrous roots.
Growing Tips
The rhizomes are divided in late spring and should be taken with a bud or shoot in place. They prefer deep, fertile, well-drained soil and a position in full sun. They should be planted half above and half below the soil, and divided every four or five years. For dried orris root, lift the rhizomes in fall and hang them in a warm place. The fragrance develops as the rhizomes wither and dry.
How to Use
The deliciously violet-scented powder obtained from the ground root of Iris is used extensively in powders for the face and body and in potpourri, tooth powder, and bath salts. Oil of orris is extracted by distillation of the root under steam. It is the exact odor of the violet flower and is used in the most expensive perfumes.
Medicinally, orris is very rarely used but it was traditionally taken for bronchitis and asthma.
