Pennyroyal
A member of the mint family, pennyroyal grows in temperate regions of
Europe and the Americas. Both American and European pennyroyal are
invasive plants that are grown as annuals and perennials, respectively.
Their eliptical leaves and clusters of lilac flowers are the sources of
the volatile oil, pulegone, extracted by steam-distillation. This pungent
oil is said to repel insects, especially fleas, which accounts for its
nickname "fleabane".
Pennyroyal's mild, muscle relaxing
effects justify its historical use for indigestion, stomach complaints,
and coughs. Pennyroyal oil taken internally or used topically at full
strength must be avoided. Because pennyroyal tea and other oral forms of
pennyroyal contain very little pulegone, they may be safe to take in small
amounts. Despite documented use dating back to ancient Greek times, little
scientific research supporting the efficacy of pennyroyal is available at
this time.
