Fennel
Considered primarily indigenous to the Mediterranean shores, fennel has
been closely associated with ancient cultures and followed the spread of
civilization. Fennel is mentioned in Greek legends, poetry, and other
ancient writings, and praised for its medicinal value in many aspects of
health and longevity. Today, fennel is used primarily for digestive
concerns and gastrointestinal afflictions. Some scientific research has
demonstrated that colicky babies can benefit from supplementation of
fennel. Fennel has shown to be effective for conditions of the upper
respiratory tract as well.

The Subterranean Forest: Energy Systems and the Industrial Revolution
Summary The historical transition from the agrarian solar energy regime to the use of fossil energy has fuelled the industrial transformation of the last 200 years. The author argues that the analysis of historical energy systems provides an explanation for different social formations because availability of free energy is the framework within which socio-metabolic processes can take place. This explains why the Industrial Revolution began in Britain, where coal was readily available and firewood already depleted or difficult to transport, whereas Germany, with its huge forests next to rivers, was much longer dependent on a traditional solar energy regime. An earlier version of this landmark text was published in German in 1982. It has been thoroughly revised and updated by the author and now appears in English for the first time.
Publisher's Notes EXCERPT....historical processes have a foundation in natural processes, which human agents cannot eliminate at will, and ... they play a role in shaping events and moulding structures.
A further important, if not fundamental, natural dimension of historical processes is the availability of energy resources and that is the subject of this book. Energy flows are basic features of ecological systems. It is energy that propels all material processes. When the energy systems of the past have been reconstructed, we will understand the natural framework that determines the physical boundaries of economic development. Energy issues were an important focus in the environmentalist debates of the 1970s and 1980s. The controversy over nuclear and solar energy as alternatives and the distinction between hard and soft energy paths (Lovins 1977) were based on the assumption that the management of energy flows was vital in environmental integration.
When I began to deal with the history of energy in a global history perspective some 20 years ago, it was within the context of this controversy. In 1982 an earlier version of this book was published in Germany. In those days I tried to answer the question of whether the character of an energy system determines future paths of social evolution - as was claimed by the opponents of nuclear energy - holds true. In this context I studied the historical transition from the agrarian solar energy regime to the use of fossil energy, which fuelled the industrial transformation of the last 200 years. I came to the conclusion that the analysis of historical energy systems provides a fundamental pattern of explanation that contributes to an understanding of the basic patterns of different social formations. The availability of free energy defines the framework within which socio-metabolic processes can take place. REVIEWS of the German (1982) edition. 'A very interesting and stimulating new synthesis on energy issues in history and their importance for the industrial revolution' (Ulrich Wengenroth, 'Neue Politische Literatur' 1985). 'A book worth reading, and stimulating even in parts where I do not agree, providing important information on central topics of history' (Karl Heinz Kaufhold, 'Das Historisch-politische Buch' 1983). 'Full of surprising details, this book addresses readers interested in the historical foundations of energy problems and environmental history in general' (H. Brźckner, Forstliche Umschau. 1984). 'This book demonstrates the exercise of an environmental history which transgresses the boundaries of scientific disciplines such as history of forestry or of technology' (Engelbert Schramm, 'Umweltmagazin' 1983).
