Description: Rupturewort is a mat-forming, short-lived perennial herb with very small, inconspicuous leaves, flower and fruits. Two species are used, namely glabrous or smooth rupturewort (H. glabra) and hairy rupturewort (H. hirsuta). In H. glabra all parts are practically hairless and bright green, while the stems and leaves of H. hirsuta are greyish green and conspicuously hairy.
Origin: Europe and Asia (H. glabra) and central Europe, the Mediterranean region and North Africa (H. hirsuta). The herb is occasionally grown in gardens but commercial material is mostly wild-harvested.
Parts Used: Dried, aboveground parts (rupturewort herb - Herniariae herba) of both species.
Therapeutic Category: Traditional diuretic (urological).
Uses and Properties: A traditional diuretic that is taken for kidney and bladder disorders. In folk medicine, it is used to treat chronic cystitis, uretbritis, bladder tenesmus (straining in attempting to urinate) and ailments of the respiratory tract, arthritis, rheumatism and for "blood purification". The name Herniaria reflects the belief that the plant can heal hernias.
Active Ingredients: Saponins are present in yields of up to 9%, with derivatives of medicagenic acid, 16-alpha-hydroxymedicagenic acid and gypsogenic acid as main compounds. Flavonoids represent up to 1.2% of dry weight (mainly quercetin and isorhamnetin derivatives). Tannins and coumarins such as umbelliferone and herniarin are present in small amounts. The two species are closely similar but some quantitative differences in the major compounds can be expected.
Pharmacological Effects: The saponins and flavonoids are considered to be the main active ingredients but their pharmacological effects have not been studied. The herb is known to be weakly spasmolytic but its efficacy and therapeutic value in the treatment of disorders of the urinary tract have not yet been demonstrated by modern studies.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+.
Preparation and Dosage: For use as diuretic, 1.5 g of the herb is added to cold water and boiled for a short time. A cupful is taken two or three times a day. Some commercial urological preparations and teas (kidney and bladder tea) contain rupturewort or extracts thereof.
