Description: Winter cherry is a perennial shrublet of up to 1 m in height, with densely velvety stems and leaves, small white or yellowish flowers in short clusters and spherical orange-red berries of about 8 mm in diameter. These are completely enclosed in brown papery and bladdery structures formed by the remains of the sepals, that enlarge markedly as the fruit develops.
Origin:W. somnifera has a wide natural distribution in Africa, southeastern Europe and Asia and often grows as a weed. It is cultivated in India and elsewhere as a medicinal crop plant.
Uses and Properties: As perhaps the best known of all the plants used in Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is a sedative, hypnotic and adaptogenic tonic to counter stress. It is widely referred to as "Indian ginseng" because it is, like real ginseng (Panax ginseng), used as general tonic and considered to be effective against a large number of ailments. The fleshy roots are indeed superficially similar to ginseng roots. For topical use, leaf poultices are applied to treat open cuts, wounds, abscesses, inflammation, haemorrhoids, rheumatism and syphilis.
Preparation and Dosage: For internal use, a dosae of 3 - 6 g of dried root, taken in the form of a decoction, infusion or tincture, is normally used. The leaves or whole plant may be applied to wounds, or ointments are made with fat or oil.
Active Ingredients: The plant contains complex mixtures of chemical compounds - more than 80 constituents have been described. Of special interest are several steroids with an ergostane skeleton, the so-called withanolides, of which withaferin A is a well-known example. Many alkaloids are present, including withasomnine.
Pharmacological Effects: The withanolides and other Withania compounds have been the subject of numerous studies in which antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, antitumour and cholesterol lowering activities have been demonstrated. Sedative and hypnotic effects have been ascribed to the alkaloids. Clinical studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of traditional indications.
