Description
Guarana, or Brazilian cocoa, is considered the highest known worldwide source of caffeine. Having 2.5 times the caffeine content of coffee, it therefore also has the entire negative effects and symptoms of heavy coffee drinking.
Guarana, like coffee and another caffeine-rich plant, yerba mate, also originates in South America. It is uniquely a rich source of guaranine, another alkaloid like caffeine that can stimulate long, slow endurance.
The bitter crushed seeds of guarana are used, medicinally, to affect the kidneys and adrenals. Guarana is regarded as a stimulant, a nervine, an aphrodisiac, a febrifuge, and a narcotic (slight). It is used as a mild stimulant but is stronger than coffee.

When taking heart medications or mood-altering drugs, you should avoid taking caffeine-containing herbs such as guarana, green tea, yerba mate and kola nut. Stimulant herbs can make your nervous system more responsive to many kinds of drugs that affect your nervous or cardiovascular system.
