Psalter of Robert de Lisle
Summary Sandler's book is devoted to "the Psalter of Robert de Lisle in the British Library. The body of this manuscript is lost, and what remains of it isa set of 19 separate leaves now rebound with another work. Sandler's book offers . . . color reproductions of all the pages containing decoration and of asingle page in black and white from the calendar that gives the name of the original owner. The text, based on the author's doctoral dissertation of 1964,{discusses} . . . the different aspects of the work: hypothetical reconstruction of the original sequence of the leaves, iconography of the miniatures, anddate and style of the different hands involved in the execution of these paintings." (Choice) Bibliography.
Publisher's Notes The Psalter of Robert de Lisle (MS Arundel 83 II), one of the major examples of 14th-century English illumination, is among the outstanding treasures in the British Library. Its miniatures are monumental and dramatic, yet at the same time graceful and exquisitely refined, modelled with the greatest subtlety and reminiscent of the emotive impact of Gothic panel painting." "All the illustrations of the De Lisle Psalter are reproduced here in colour, both the series of narrative miniatures of the Life of Christ, as well as the group of unusual moral and theological diagrams, known as the Speculum theologie. Each miniature is accompanied by a detailed descriptive and explanatory text, while the General Introduction discusses the style and iconography of the miniatures in the context of contemporary English painting, and offers conclusions about patronage, date and provenance. The author also analyses the pictorial and textual components of the elaborate theological diagrams, and for further study provides a Handlist of a group of thirty-six manuscripts containing the same series of Speculum theologie diagrams.
