General Herb Information
Safflower - American Saffron, False Saffron (Carthamus tinctorius).
Propagation: By seed, easy germination.
Nature of Plant: Has no connection with Saffron, a bulbous plant; stiff, erect stems grow to 2 feet or more; leaves are oval shaped with sharp, spiny points; flower heads resemble a thistle, having red florets with yellow styles; the fruit, wrongly called seed, are almost 4 sided and are shiny, pearl-white; sowed in clumps, it makes a colorful spot in the garden.
Spacing of Mature Plants: 6 inches.
Cultural Requirements: In warm, light soil, needs sun, cultivate until plant is in bud.
Uses
Flower: (Medicinal) Produces perspiration, cathartic; (Industrial) red florets used in dyeing silk from rose to red, mixed with talcum powder to make a dry rouge, substitute and adulterant for Saffron as coloring matter, colors liqueurs, cosmetics, confectionery.
Seed: (Industrial) drying oil for paint; (Medicinal) cathartic; (Culinary) oil is much used in India; (Household) in India oil is used for burning.

The orange-colored, aromatic, pungent stigmas of the saffron plant (Crocus sativus), native to Asia Minor, have been dried and ground since Greek and Roman antiquity, and used not only as a spice and coloring agent for food, but also medicinally as an ingredient in pills; as a cleaning and antispasmodic agent for the stomach; a nerve tonic and opiate against hysteria and as a relief for nose-bleeds and menstruation.
Preparation and Dosage: Infusions and tinctures of the flowers are used, or the crude or purified seed oil. A tea made from one teaspoon of the dried flowers in a cup of boiling water is taken twice a day.
