Description: Mullein is a leafy biennial herb with a robust rosette of woolly leaves. A branched panicle with erect spikes (up to 2 m), densely packed with yellow flowers, develops in the second year of growth. Mostly used are orange mullein, V. phlomoides and large-flowered mullein, V. densiflorum (= V. thapsiforme). They are distinguished mainly by the size of the flowers and the hairiness of the stamens. A third species, great mullein (V. thaspus), is sometimes not distinguished from V. phlomoides and is also an acceptable source of raw material.
Origin: Central, eastern and southern Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa (V. phiomoides and V. densiflorum); commercially grown in Egypt and eastern Europe.
Parts Used: Dried flower petals, including the corolla and stamens (Verbasci flos), rarely the leaves (Verbasci folium).
Uses and Properties:Verbasci flos are mainly used to treat catarrh of the respiratory tract. The drug shows demulcent and secretolytic properties. It is therefore widely used to treat coughs, influenza and bronchitis and is included in herbal tea mixtures. The herb is also considered to be diaphoretic and diuretic, and is used externally to treat wounds and other skin disorders. Dried leaves are used in a similar way.
Preparation and Dosage: A daily dose of 3 - 4 g is recommended, taken as a tea (1 g in 150 mL boiling water). Extracts are included in soothing syrups and also in ointments and oils to treat earache, haemorrhoids, sores and boils.
Active Ingredients: Triterpene saponins, including verbascosaponin are present, together with about 3% mucilage (after hydrolysis it yields mainly galactose, arabinose and uronic acids). Other main components are iridoid glycosides (aucubin, catalpol and related compounds), flavonoids (up to 4%, mainly rutin and hesperidin) and various phenolic acids.
Pharmacological Effects: The saponins are secretolytic and expectorant, the mucilage demulcent, the flavonoids thought to be weakly diuretic and the iridoid glycosides anti-inflammatory. Antiviral effects have also been demonstrated, but clinical studies are needed to confirm the traditional indications.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+ (flowers only).
