While the Tetum language is spoken throughout the island, it includes a range of East Timorese communication by including common colloquial and literary Tetum, archaic rural Tetum, and other local dialects. It also offers idiomatic examples, grammatical classifications, a brief sociolinguistic introduction, a guide to spelling and pronunciation, and a short appendix of Indonesian words currently used in East Timor.
Geoffrey Hull works as a linguist. He teaches one of the only existing English-medium courses in Tetum and is the author of the first school textbooks in the East Timorese language. He lives in Baulkham Hills, Australia.
