Description
Borage Borago officinalis (Star Flower)
Medicinal Usage
For the three periods of vegetation of Borage, in which the plant changes composition, there are three clear properties, i. e., it is first emollient and demulcent, later depurative and sudorific and finally diuretic. Because of the nitre it contains.
Borage has been recommended for ailments requiring the use of depuratives and sudorifics, for example, various skin diseases. It has been prescribed in eruptive fevers and phiegmasia. The Ancients assigned it stimulant properties that are no longer recognized today.
Internally, borage was utilised to treat fevers, dry skin conditions and bronchial infections. The oil was prescribed for kidney, bladder and bowel complaints, arthritis, and nervous disorders. Externally, the herb was used in a poultice to soothe inflammation and bruises; and, in a lotion, for bathing sore eyes. Gerard recommended syrup from the flowers to "comforteth the heart, purgeth melancholy, and quieteth the frenetic or lunatic person."
Culinary Usage
The young leaves of borage were cooked like spinach or added raw to salads. They also added a cucumber-like flavour to wine and cold drinks.
Miscellaneous
Valued in ancient times for its ability to dispel melancholy and impart courage, borage flowers were included in stirrup cups offered to Crusaders departing for the Holy Land. Modern research suggests that chemicals in the herb act upon the adrenal gland, the "organ of courage". Gerard quoted the old Latin verse: "I Borage bring always courage." As a native of the Mediterranean, the plant was known to Greek and Roman botanists. Pliny said that it "makes men merry and joyful."
