Other Names: Bourrache (French); Boretsch (German); boragine (Italian); borraja (Spanish).
Description: Borage is a robust annual herb of about 0.5 m in height with large hairy leaves and attractive blue flowers.
Origin: Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region; cultivated worldwide as a culinary herb.
Parts Used: Flowers (Boraginis flos), flowering tops (Boraginis herba) or the seed oil.
Therapeutic Category: General tonic, anti-irritant.
Uses and Properties: Borage flowers or borage herb are traditionally used as diuretic, diaphoretic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and emulcent, and also as mild sedative and anti-depressant. The seed oil is known commercially as "starflower oil"; it is similar to evening primrose oil.
Active Ingredients: Borage contains mucilages (about 11%) and trace amounts (0.004%) of several unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) (including amabiine, supinidine, lycopsamine, and intermedine). The seed oil contains high levels of unsaturated y-linolenic acid (abbreviated as GLA), an essential fatty acid. The oil contains about 21% GLA (compared to the 9% in evening primrose oil; see Oenothera biennis) , together with linoleic acid (30-40%) and oleic acid (about 15 %). The oil appears to be alkaloid free.
Pharmacological Effects: Unsaturated dietary fatty acids have been shown to influence stress reactivity and performance. In a trial of 10 individuals, a dose of 1.3 g of seed oil (taken daily for 28 days) increased cardiovascular reactivity. GLA is used to treat eczema and neurodermitis. The soothing properties can be ascribed to the mucilage content. PAs alkylate DNA and are known to be hepatotoxic and carcinogenic.
Notes: Another member of the family Boraginaceae is Cynoglossum officinale (hound's tongue), which contains PAs and allantoin. It is traditionally used in much the same way as comfrey.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.
