Description
This is the most interesting species of the genus. It has white flowers striped violet which open in summer and make a pretty show. This plant was once thought to have enormous virtues; it was particularly believed to be effective for ophthalmia; a yellow spot in the throat was compared to an eye, earning it not only this high repute, but also the popular name casse-lunettes. It was frequently used in eye washes.
Culpeper writes: "If the herb was but as much used as it is neglected, it would half spoil the spectacle makers' trade. The juice or distilled water of Eyebright, taken inwardly in white wine or broth or dropped into the eyes for diverse days together helps all infirmities of the eyes that cause dimness of sight. It also helps a weak brain or memory."
Some people smoke dried Eyebright as they would tobacco; a kind of wine can be made from it by cooking it with unfermented wine at harvest time. Eyebright should not be taken internally to excess because there have been cases of stomach disorders produced after a time. Its juice is acrid, and has an unpleasant taste. Another variety was long held to cure toothache.
