Description

Blackberry
Rubus fructicosus
(Bramble)

Medicinal Usage

Bramble leaves were used as an astringent and tonic; for dysentery, diarrhoea and haemorrhoids; as a poultice to treat burns, swellings and ulcers; and as an infusion for stomach disorders. Externally, they were used as a mouthwash, and as a gargle for sore throats and gum inflammations. Culpeper recommended the leaves be used in a lotion for sores "in the secret parts". The ancient Greeks prescribed bramble for gout. Crawling backwards, or being dragged through a bramble thicket was an ancient remedy for boils (clearly a case of the cure being worse, or almost as bad as, the affliction). Bleeding caused by the thorns could be stemmed byrubbing the freshly-crushed leaves on the scratches.

Culinary Usage

The fruit of the bramble was eaten fresh or cooked, and made into jams, jellies, syrups, cordials, vinegar and wine (it was also used to improve grape wines). The leaves were added to herbal teas.

Miscellaneous

Blackberries have been eaten in England since at least Neolithic times. Although used in medieval monasteries, they were not cultivated as a garden plant because they have always grown profusely in the wild, and have vicious thorns. The fruit yields a blue-grey dye, and the root an orange dye. The berries, leaves, and root bark of of the blackberry plant are all used medicinally. In terms of flavor, the berries are sweet, while the leaves and bark are astringent. Both the liver and kidneys are affected by the herb. Berries contain isocitric and malic acids; sugars, pectin, monoglycoside of cyanidin, vitamin C and A. Blackberries have been used to treat anemia. The root and leaves are antipyretic, astringent and hemostatic, and they contain tannins, making it a useful herb for conditions that include fevers, colds, sore throats, and vaginal discharge.

Blackberries are a Yin, blood-nourishing tonic. The leaves are used for mucus discharges, fevers, colds and sore throats. The root bark is one of the best remedies for diarrhea, dysentery and bleeding.

How to Use the Herb

To make a tea, pour boiling water over 2 teaspoonfuls and steep for 10 minutes; the tea can also double as mouthwash. Commission E recommends ingestion of 4-5 grams of dried leaf per day for medical use. Health writer Michael Castleman recommends up to 2 teaspoonfuls of tincture per day to treat diarrhea or soothe a sore throat.

How to Brew

By Infusion: Cover 1 teaspoon dried leaves (or 3 teaspoons fresh leaves) with 1 cup boiling water. Steep to taste.

Berry Good Soother

This is a tasty combination, similar to China tea, that is good for digestion and colds:
  • 1 teaspoon rose hips
  • 1 teaspoon dried hibiscus leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried alfalfa leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried blackberry leaves
Mix all ingredients well. Steep 1 teaspoon of mixture in 1 cup boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes, or to taste.
