Other Names: Bramble; ronce noire (French); Brombeere (German); rovo (Italian).
Description:R. fruticosus comprises a species complex with more than 100 separate species; it is a crawling and prickly shrub (up to 3 m) bearing compound leaves with prickles along the midrib, and sparse hairs on the lower surface. The flowers are white to pale pink and are followed by clusters of black berries. Raspberry (R. idaeus) is less prickly but has a dense layer of white hairs on the lower surface of the leaves and the fruit is pinkish red when ripe (unlike bramble, the berry separates from the common receptable when ripe).
Origin: Europe and the Mediterranean region, but naturalised on all continents. Raspberry occurs naturally in Europe, Asia and North America. Both species have given rise to commercial cultivars, grown for their delicious fruit.
Parts Used: Enzymatically fermented and dried leaves. Bramble leaf (Rubi fruticosi folium) and raspberry leaf (Rubi idaei folium) are both used.
Therapeutic Category: Astringent.
Uses and Properties: Bramble leaf is recommended as an astringent and for treating non-specific acute diarrhoea and inflammation of the mouth and throat. Dried or fermented leaves are included in tea mixtures. Raspberry leaves are mainly used for their astringent properties (to treat diarrhoea and as gargle for mouth or throat infections) and as ingredients in commercial herbal tea mixtures. Raspberry leaf is traditionally used to ease labour in childbirth.
Preparation and Dosage: A tea made from 1.5 g of leaves (both bramble and raspberry) is taken up to three times per day.
Active Ingredients: Bramble leaf contains about 10% hydrolysable tannins (gallotannins, dimeric ellagitannins), and flavonoids. Gallotannins, ellagitannins and flavonoids have also been found in raspberry leaf.
Pharmacological Effects: The tannin content of the leaves is clearly in agreement with the observed astringent and antidiarrhoeic effects. Limited information on other indications is available. Animal and human studies have indicated that raspberry leaf has uteronic activity causing contraction of uterine muscles.
Staus: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+ (blackberry leaf).
The humble blackberry - thorny, fruit-bearing, the creeping bramble found in gardens and backyards and in the wild - has little-appreciated medical applications. The medicinally available properties are in the leaf of this common plant, which is a relative of the rose and the raspberry.
Potential Health Benefits
The dried leaf is used to treat acute diarrhea and for soothing sore throat.
Scientific Evidence
The tannins in blackberry leaves have a drying, astringent quality useful for treating diarrhea. Blackberry isn't the subject of extensive scientific testing. Commission E's recommendations are drawn from the long empirical use of blackberry in German medicine.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Blackberry leaf is safe. There are no known contraindications, interactions with drugs, or side effects. Sensitive individuals can experience gastric distress because of the tannins in blackberry, although leaves have lower concentrations of tannins than does the root.
