Its fruit, mixed with honey, gives a kind of lemonade used for dysentery and scurvy. Matthiolus reports that with these fruits, a wine can be made that the apothecaries call wine of Barberry used for malignant, choleraic and pestilential fevers, diarrhea and vomiting deriving from an abundance of choleric humors, menstrual fluxes, the spitting of blood, to resolve inflammations of the palate and the throat, to heal flesh wounds, clean old ulcers, firm the gums and teeth.
The concentrated juice of the berries is today used in preparing tablets for this last purpose.
