Description
Silverweed Potentilla anserina L.
Family: Rosaceae.
Other Names: Herbe d'ansérine, argentine (French); Gänsefingerkraut (German); argentina anserina, potentilla (Italian).
Description: A low perennial herb that spreads through long runners. It has pinnately compound leaves, with markedly dentate and densely silky leaflets, giving them a silvery appearance. The yellow flowers are typical of the family (five petals, numerous stamens) and are borne on long stalks. It is one of two Potentilla species that are used in traditional medicine.
Origin: Asia, Europe and North America. The plants grow in grasslands and are wild-harvested shortly before or during flowering, mainly in eastern Europe.
Parts Used: Fresh or dried leaves (silverweed herb - Anserinae herba).
Therapeutic Category: Astringent.
Uses and Properties: The herb is used mainly to treat nonspecific diarrhoea and mucosal inflammations of the mouth and throat. It is also used in case of minor menstrual disorders. Traditionally it is recommended against cramps and spasms, and to treat colic. As an astringent it is said to be an effective treatment for bleeding haemorrhoids, sores and eczema.
Preparation and Dosage: An infusion made from 2 g of the dried herb can be taken three times a day. The infusion can also be applied to the skin, or gargled, in the case of mouth and throat infections.
Active Ingredients: The leaves contain at least 5-10% tannins, to which the astringent qualities are ascribed. The tannins are of the ellagic acid type, and both monomeric and dimeric ellagitannins are present. Flavonoids (kaempferol, myricetin, quercetin), proanthocyanidins and phenolic acids (ferulic, caffeic acid) may also contribute to some extent to the medicinal properties of the plant.
Pharmacological Effects: Silverweed is mainly used for its astringent properties, which are clearly related to the high tannin content. Tannins can interact with its multitude of hydroxy groups with proteins; they alter the conformation of enzymes, receptors and transporters and often inactivate them. This would explain the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and haemostyptic activities observed. Animal studies have shown that the drug has an effect on the tone and contraction frequency of uterine muscles, so that the traditional use against mild dysmenorrhoea seems plausible. The reported spasmolytic activity needs re-evaluation.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+.
This plant is above all used in homoeopathic medicine and is extremely effective as an antispasmodic.
