Strawberries were used for wounds, stomach and urinary disorders, dysentery, diarrhoea, liver complaints and digestive upsets. Strawberry leaf tea was taken as a tonic after illness, and for anaemia and bad nerves. According to the Doctrine of Signatures the colour and shape of the fruit suggested that it was a cure for heart disease. Gerard said "the distilled water drunk with white wine is good against the passion of the heart, reviving the spirits, and making the heart merry." The crushed fruits were used to lighten the complexion; remove freckles, soothe sunburn and whiten discoloured teeth.
Culinary Usage
Strawberries were eaten raw, made into sauces, desserts, jams and syrups, or used to flavour liqueurs, cordials and cooked meat.
Miscellaneous
A native of Britain, wild strawberries were known to the ancient Britons, the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons. The plant was listed by Aelfric. The name comes from the Old English for to strew, and refers to the spreading of the plant's creepers over the ground, and not from the much later practice of putting straw under the berries. Some authorities, however, suggest that the name may come from the scattering of pips over the surface of the fruit. As a symbol of perfection and righteousness, the strawberry was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In medieval art and literature it also represented sensuality and earthly desire. The fruit was used in cosmetics, and the dried leaves were added to pot-pourri.
The Strawberry, rich in water and sugar, does not agree with everybody's stomach and can even cause skin eruptions, particularly nettle-rash; it cannot always be eaten by dyspeptics, diabetics or those suffering from obesity. It is refrigerant and diuretic, sometimes laxative; it has been recommended for gout and gravel.
Strawberry root is an astringent, and as such, useful in genito-urinary diseases. The infusion of the leaves is diuretic and diaphoretic.
