Description
Ash Tree Fraxinus excelsior L.
Family: Oleaceae.
Other Names: Common ash; European ash; frêne élevé (French); Gemeine Esche (German); frassino (Italian); fresno (Spanish).
Description: Ash is a deciduous tree (up to 40 m), with compound leaves (three to six pairs of leaflets), inconspicuous flowers and winged fruits. The small white warty spots (lenticels) on the twigs and the black leaf buds are characteristic. Manna ash (F. ornus) is a small tree with five to nine leaflets per leaf and white flowers.
Origin: Europe and southwestern Asia (F. excelsior); Europe and western Asia (F. ornus). Products are obtained through wild-harvesting (common ash) or commercial cultivation in the Mediterranean region (manna ash).
Parts Used: Bark of young branches (Fraxini cortex) and leaves (Fraxini folium); F. ornus yields manna (Manna cannelata) - dried sugary exudate that flows after insect damage or after deliberate incisions of the bark during warm, dry weather.
Therapeutic Category: Anti-inflammatory (F. excelsior); osmotic laxative (F. ornus).
Uses and Properties: Ash bark is a traditional tonic, especially in cases of fever and rheumatism, while the leaves are used to treat minor pains in the joints, bladder complaints, constipation (nowadays in weight loss programmes). Externally it is used to treat wounds and ulcers. Manna is a useful laxative, especially when a soft stool is required (in cases of painful haemorrhoids, anal fissures or after surgery).
Active Ingredients: Ash bark and ash leaf contain tannnins, flavonoids (rutin), coumaroyl glucosides (isofraxin, aesculin), secoiridoid glucosides (syringoxide, 1O-hydroxyligstroside) and phenolic acids (ferulic acid, sinapic acid) and triterpenes. Manna is composed mainly of D-mannitol (70-90%), with smaller amounts of D-glucose, D-fructose and oligosaccharides.
Pharmacological Effects: Isolated coumarins and iridoids of Fraxinus inhibit prostaglandin and leucotriene formation; this would explain anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. Mannitol is a natural osmotic laxative (salts or sugars retain or increase the water content of the stool simply by their osmotic action).
Note:F. chinensis, F. americana, and F. rhynchophylla have been used in a similar way to F. excelsior.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.; Comm. E+ (manna only).
Preparation and Dosage: Ash bark and ash leaf are rarely used in modern medicine. Manna is given at a daily dose of 20 - 30 g for adults and 2 - 16 g for children.
