Description
Also called Indian tobacco or pukeweed, lobelia produces bitter leaves and seeds that have expectorant, stimulant, antispasmodic, and emetic properties. Medicinally, lobelia has been used to treat health concerns such as asthma, spasmodic coughs, spasms and tetany, food poisoning (vomit), and it is used as a catalyst for other herbs in combinations and formulas. The biochemical makeup of lobelia includes various alkaloids including lobeline, which has similar effects to nicotine, making it useful in anti-smoking regimes.
Lobelia is primarily employed for asthma, bronchitis, spasmodic coughs and upper-respiratory complaints. It is also useful for spasmodic neurological problems and is one of the fastest-acting herbal antispasmodics known. Thus many old-time herbalists commonly added it in small amounts to serve as a catalyst preparing the body to better accept and utilize the major ingredients in a formula.
An aura of controversy has always surrounded the possibility of lobelia toxicity. The experience of the late Dr. John Raymond Christopher and hundreds of herbalists and doctors before him have concluded that there is no problem with the use of this herb.
Lobelia is one of the best herbs to use as an emetic and can be useful during the height of an asthmatic attack. The best method is to use acid tincture of lobelia made with apple-cider vinegar. Begin by drinking a large volume of lukewarm mint tea and follow by taking one teaspoon of lobelia tincture every ten minutes for three or four times or until emesis ensues. The lobelia will promote vomiting and leave the body perfectly relaxed Externally, it can be applied to bruises, sprains, insect bites, tumors and cancers.
Dosage: 3-15 grams; of the tincture, 5-15 drops.
