Also known as sabal or seronoa, the saw palmetto bush produces pungent, sweet berries that are used medicinally. Saw palmetto berries are known to be a Yin tonic and anabolic agent; they have diuretic, expectorant, roborant, sedative, endocrine and aphrodisiac properties. Primarily affecting the kidneys, spleen, and liver, these berries have been recommended for wasting diseases, underweight conditions, urinary tract infections, impotence and frigidity, and especially disorders of the prostate. Biochemical analysis has identified an essential oil, fatty acids, carotene, polysaccharides, tannin, sitosterol, invert sugar, and estrogenic substance within the saw palmetto berry.
Saw palmetto is used for debilitating and wasting conditions, prostatic enlargement (especially when combined with echinacea and damiana), urinary tract infections, impotence and frigidity.
For enlarged and debilitated prostate, combine equal parts saw palmetto berries, damiana and echinacea. Grind to a powder (saw palmetto is not very appealing to most people) and take two to four capsules three times daily.
