Red Yeast Rice
Red yeast rice has been used for centuries in China for both culinary and
medicinal purposes. As its name suggests, red yeast rice is made from
fermenting red yeast on rice. This fermentation process yields quantities
of cholesterol-lowering compounds known as "statins". The
presence of similar statins in well known cholesterol drugs has led to
controversy surrounding whether or not red yeast rice should be classified
as a drug or dietary supplement. A prescription extract of red yeast rice,
called Cholestin, has since been removed from the American market in its
original form, due to similarities to the popular family of pharmaceutical
statin drugs.
Both laboratory studies and placebo-controlled
clinical trials confirm the cholesterol-lowering abilities of red yeast
rice. In several studies, results showed that mild to excessive levels of
elevated cholesterol were significantly reduced with red yeast rice
supplementation. Since red yeast rice contains similar active compounds as
many of the prescription cholesterol drugs, it may be associated with a
similar list of precautions and, although rare, potential side effects.
However, it is unclear how these statins in a non-synthetic, more natural
form are affected by the other ingredients present in red yeast
rice.
Red yeast rice can be part of an effective regime to lower
cholesterol levels that would also include proper diet and exercise. Lower
cholesterol levels may, in turn, lead to a decreased risk of heart
disease.
Directions
Stir 1/4 of a teaspoon into a glass of water and consume 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Avoid drinking grapefruit juice with red rice yeast.
Patients with thyroid disease should use with caution.
