Description
This native of central and southern Europe, now grown in temperate wetlands around the world, is widely recognized for its grace and beauty. It's not the long, slender leaves and hanging branches that are used medicinally, however, but the bark of the tree. Willow bark was used as a painkiller and anti-inflammatory drug in ancient Mesopotamia, in ancient China, and among Native Americans. The white willow is a source of sailcin, which eventually led to the laboratory synthesis of aspirin.
Potential Health Benefits
Commission E recommends white willow bark as a medicine for diseases accompanied by fever, rheumatic ailments, inflammation, and headaches. In Asia, the bark is also employed to combat jaundice, a use not endorsed by Commission E.
Scientific Evidence
Sailcin, which French and German chemists isolated in the 1820s, is the active pain- and inflammation-fighting chemical in white willow bark. The bark isn't as concentrated as laboratory aspirin, and thus not as strong, but it works in a similar way and doesn't upset the stomach as much as more-potent aspirin. Herbalists consider it to be a natural, gentle version of aspirin. Despite its similarity to aspirin, white willow bark hasn't been tested in scientific studies for efficacy in preventing heart attacks and strokes, as has aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in recent years.
How to Use the Herb
Commission E recommends an average daily dose of 60-120 milligrams of salicin, the active ingredient in either liquid or solid preparations.
White willow bark can be taken in a tea, made by putting 1-2 teaspoonfuls of powdered bark in cold water, and then boiling the water and letting it steep for 5 minutes. Take the tea 3 to 5 times per day. The tea is bitter; adding honey can help it go down.

Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Although white willow bark hasn't been reported to cause aspirin-like side effects, herbalists recommend that pregnant women give it a pass and thus avoid the risk of birth defects.
Similarly, the herb shouldn't be given to children under 16 who may be at risk for Reye's syndrome, a potentially fatal condition. It also shouldn't be taken with aspirin or by people with ulcers or other gastrointestinal conditions.
