Traditionally, Periwinkle has been used to treat a variety of conditions. Native Indians used the juice from Periwinkle leaves to treat wasp stings. Hawaiians boiled the plant to make a poultice to stop bleeding. In China, and Central and South America, it was used as an astringent and diuretic. They also used it to treat coughs, lung congestion, inflammation and sore throat. In the Caribbean, an extract from the flowers was used to make a solution to treat eye irritation and infections. The Europeans used Periwinkle as a folk remedy for treating diabetes, but they also called it the magic plant, because they thought it could ward off evil spirits. The French called it the "violet of the sorcerers."
Rosy Periwinkle produces 70 known alkaloids, some of which are used by the pharmaceutical industry for the treatment of childhood leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, testicular cancer and cancerous tumors. Taken as a daily supplement, it improves the blood supply to the brain, increases oxygen and glucose for the brain to use, helps prevent abnormal coagulation of blood, and it raises brain levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Externally, Rosy Periwinkle leaves poultices can be used to relieve wasp stings and eye inflammation, and to stop bleeding. Ointments can be used externally as well.

Directions
Hot tea brewing method: Bring freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 tea bag for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the pot, cover and let steep for 2-4 minutes. Pour into your cup; add milk and sugar to taste.
Iced tea brewing method: (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 5 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea itself. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into the serving pitcher straining the tea bags. Add ice and top-up with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste.
Cautions
Side effects from oral use of Periwinkle have been slight and usually disappear after taking the supplement for awhile or after discontinuing use.
Some people noted a brief drop in blood pressure or faster heart rate after starting this supplement.
Periwinkle has not been found to interact with other drugs.
Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
