Description
Name
Vaccinium macrocarpon Alt (Ericaceae), commonly known as cranberry, the swamp cranberry, also the trailing swamp cranberry. Its European cousins are Vaccinium oxycoccos, L., and Oxycoccus quadripetalus L. In France it is Canneberge; in Germany, Moosheere.
Source
The American cranberry grows in natural or artificial bogs on both coasts of the United States. V. oxycoccos, grows naturally, usually in peat-bogs, in some parts of Europe and also in Northern Asia.
History
Cranberry appears to be one of the few plants not to have generated any sort of mythology. Medical applications for the plant have only become apparent within the last decade.
Traditional Claims
The fruit of the American cranberry is used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections, particularly in older women.
Commission E Recommendations
Commission E did not review cranberry.
Proven Effects
Cranberry juice can prevent and eradicate some types of urinary tract infections. In controlled studies of postmenopausal women, drinking 300 milliliters (slightly more than one cup) per day of cranberry juice reduced the frequency of bacterial infections (bacteriuria) and the associated presence of white blood cells in the urine (pyuria) by nearly half. Young women seem to get the same benefits. Something in cranberry juice prevents bacteria from binding to the walls of the bladder, and if the bacteria cannot adhere to the surface cells, they cannot cause an infection. The tannin contained in cranberry seems to have antineoplastic effects, but it never has been tested in patients with cancer. Cranberry contains relatively high concentrations of flavonoids (quercetin and myrecetin) and anthocyanidins. In the test tube, these chemicals prevent the oxidation of low density cholesterol (LDL), and LDL oxidation leads to coronary artery disease. These same flavonols and anthocyanidins are found in red wines and grape juice. Many researchers believe their presence helps explain why the French, who drink much more red wine, and eat much more fat than Americans, have fewer heart attacks. The flavonoid content of cranberry juice is higher than that of wine or beer, but lower than that of concord grape juice.
Dosage
In clinical trials, the dose has been 300 milliliters (slightly more than a cup) per day. In the clinical trials of young women with bladder infections, the daily dose was one capsule containing 400 milligrams of dried cranberry solids.

Drug Testing
Cranberry juice will not interfere with standard workplace urine drug tests, but women with urinary tract infections could conceivably have a problem. When infections occur, large amounts of substances called nitrates appear in the urine. Nitrates interfere with some workplace urine tests, and some drug users try to cheat by adding nitrate to their urine samples. If large quantities of nitrates are found in the urine, some testers may consider their presence proof that the sample was adulterated. Women with urinary tract infections who are forced to submit a sample should make sure the laboratory is aware of their condition. Generally, the amount of nitrate produced by infection is much less than the amount added by cheaters, but questions could still arise.
