Oregon grape root is typically recommended for liver and gallbladder problems, menstrual irregularities, skin diseases, arthritis, and cancer.
The yellow rhizome is used as a gentle hepatic-biliary stimulant. By enhancing the flow of bile through the liver and gallbladder, the entire function of the liver is improved. Thus the blood is purified of toxins. For this reason, Oregon grape root can be used for all liver diseases including hepatitis and gallstones. It is also used for skin diseases, bronchial congestion, arthritis, cancers, tumors and other serious diseases.
Since they grow together, a tradition from the mountains of the Pacific Northwest is to combine equal amounts of Oregon grape root and pipsissewa together for the treatment of many acute and chronic diseases including hepatitis, jaundice, arthritis, cancer and heart problems.
For liver problems including jaundice and hepatitis, combine equal parts Oregon grape root and dandelion root with a quarter part fennel seed for flavoring. Drink at least three cups daily during the acute crises. Eat very simple, bland, moist foods such as porridge, soups or steamed vegetables.
Oregon grape root is an effective treatment when combined with other herbs such as tang kuei or chaste berry for PMS in women. A good formula is to combine equal parts Oregon grape root, tang kuei, cramp bark, chaste berries and a half part ginger; take as a tea two times daily a week before menses.
Oregon grape root can be considered the Pacific Northwestern counterpart of barberry, which grows in the Northeast. For that matter, there are similar species and varieties that grow in many areas throughout the world. The Eclectics found all species of berberis and berberine-containing herbs, such as goldenseal to be a specific tonic for chronic affections of the mucous membranes. Oregon grape root is therefore effective for any abnormal discharges, including phlegm and catarrh, leucorrhea, and sperrnatorrhea.
