Description
SWEET BASIL (Ocimum basilicum), a member of the mint family, native to tropical Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands, was the most sacred plant in the Hindu gardens of India, worshipped by all members of the family. Its name is derived from the Greek basilicos - royal. Sweet basil has been used since pre-Christian times as a cooking herb.
Medicinal Usage
Basil leaves were used in wine as a tonic for gastro-intestinal complaints and, although a stimulant, to soothe nerves. When crushed, they were used as a snuff to relieve headaches and nasal colds.
Culinary Usage
Basil, preferably fresh, seasoned medieval sauces, soups and thinks. Although versatile, it is one of the few herbs that increases its flavour when cooked, and should be used sparingly.
Miscellaneous
Thought to be a native of south-east Asia, basil has been cultivated in Europe from at least Roman times. As it likes a warm Mediterranean climate, it is difficult to grow in Britain. Because it releases its scent when walked upon, basil was a useful herb for strewing on floors to cover offensive smells. It also, reputedly, repelled flies. The oil is not only used in medicine, but also for making perfumes and incense.
