Description

Acacia
Acacia senegal (L.) Willd.

Family: Fabaceae.

Other Names: Gum acacia; gum arabic tree; gum Senegal tree; acacie gomme arabique (French); Verek-Akazie (German); acacia del Senegal (Italian).

Description: This is a small, thorny tree (up to 6 m) with a rounded to spreading crown, compound leaves and elongated spikes of pale yellow to cream-coloured, fluffy flowers. Thorns are arranged in groups of three.

Origin: Africa. The tree occurs naturally in the arid parts of tropical regions, from southern to northern Africa; production of the gum occurs mainly in North Africa (Mali, Mauritania, Senegal and especially the Sudan; tree is known as hashab).

Parts Used: Gum, "gum arabic" (true gum arabic). This is the air-dried exudate that may flow naturally from the trees (after infection and under stress condition) and is simply collected, or the trees may be tapped (by the careful removal of strips of bark without injury to the cambium). The raw product comprises rounded, brittle, yellowish or pale brown masses or irregular glassy fragments. It is tasteless and odourless. Gum is also obtained, albeit to a minor degree, from other Acacia species in Africa (A. nilotica, A. lcarroo, A. seyal, A. abyssinica, A. horrida, A. kirkii, A. erioloba), Australia (A. dealbata, A. decurrens, A. homalophylla, A. pycnantha), Asia (A. arabica, A. ferruginea, A. leucophloea) and America (A. angico, A. farnesiana).

Therapeutic Category: Protective of skin and mucosa.

Uses and Properties: Medicinally, gum arabic and Cape gum have been used as emollient and skin protective agents and as pharmaceutical aids: as emulsifiers, stabilisers of suspensions and additives for solid formulations. It is sometimes used to treat bacterial and fungal infections of the skin and mouth.

Preparation and Dosage: The product is applied to the skin or is included in formulations and tablets.

Active Ingredients: Gum arabic is a complex polysaccharide (MW 270000) comprising mainly arabinose, galactose, D-glucuronic acid and L-rhamnose subunits.

Pharmacological Effects: Gum arabic softens and soothes the skin and mucosa, and has a moisturising, antibiotic and protective action that promotes healing.

Notes: The gum has numerous industrial applications (adhesives, inks and paints). Gums from various species of Acacia are important food items in rural areas and are used commercially as additive in the food industry (as tasteless and non-toxic stabilisers and emulsifiers).

Status: Pharm.
