Description
Kudzu (or ko hen in Chinese) root has a sweet taste and affects the lungs and stomach acting as an antipyretic, a refrigerant, a diaphoretic, a spasmolytic, and a demulcent.
Kuzu root or Kudzu Vine, as it is sometimes called, is commonly used as a treatment for cold, flu and gastrointestinal problems. For colds and flu it is excellent to take mixed with a small amount of licorice, cinnamon, ginger and tamari-soya sauce. It also neutralizes acidity in the body and thus relieves minor aches and pains.
It is a mild acting substance high in starch. The starch extracted from the root is dried into chunks and used as a sauce-thickening substitute for arrowroot. It grows wild in the Southern states, where it is considered the scourge of the South. Its fast growing, hardy vines seem to creep over everything and are most difficult to eradicate.

Here at University, we all like a pint. Or two. Sometimes more. ;) When exams come around, it is sometimes hard to beat the desire to go for a brew. But we all know we're wise to hold up. The mom of one of my mates is a herbalist, and she told him about Kudzu. We all thought it was a farce, just a placebo at best. Maybe it is a placebo. But I have to tell you: we all pop Kudzu during exams, and none of us feel like we can't go without a drink. (Excuse the double negative, I'm a university student, what'd you expect?) The result is less time spent drinking, more money leftover in the pocket, zero time spent getting over a hangover, and better marks. Placebo? Legitimate result from Kudzu compounds? I'm not sure. I've googled it, and I do see that there are actual studies out there that show Kudzu does lead to a reduction in alcohol consumption, so, coupled with my own experience, I'd have to emphatically say: Yes, Kudzu works!
