Description
Horseradish Armoracia rusticana P Gaertn., Mey. & Scherb. (= Anaoracia lapathifolia Gilib.; = Cochlearia arnwracia L.)
Family: Brassicaceaea.
Other Names: Grand raifort (French); Meerrettich, Kren (German); cren (Italian); rabano puante (Spanish).
Description: Horseradish is a leafy perennial herb with large, dark green leaves arising directly from a thick taproot. Small white flowers are borne on long flowering stalks of up to 1 m high.
Origin: Possibly from the Volga-Don area in eastern Europe. The fruits do not form viable seeds and it is therefore possible that the plant is a sterile hybrid. It has been cultivated since ancient times from root cuttings and is today found on all continents.
Parts Used: Root (Asmoraciae radix).
Therapeutic Category: Disorders of respiratory and urinary tract; skin irritant.
Uses and Properties: Traditionally used to treat bronchial conditions and urinary tract infections and externally applied as a counter-irritant to treat rheumatism and inflammation. It is best known as a spice.
Active Ingredients: The fresh root is rich in glucosinolates (mustard oil glycosides) of which gluconasturtin and sinigrin are the main compounds. During the drying process the glucosinolates are hydrolysed by myrosinase to yield phenylethyl isothiocyanate and allyl isothiocyanate respectively, that are present in the volatile oil. The mot is a commercial source of the enzyme peroxidase, and contains coumarins, phenolic acids, ascorbic acid, and others.
Pharmacological Effects: Isothiocyanates can form covalent bonds with proteins and thus alter their activity. They have antimicrobial, spasmolytic, cytotoxic and skin irritant (hyperaemic) properties.
Notes: Horseradish should not be confused with the edible common radish (Raphanus sativus) , which also contains mustard oil glycosides. According to the German Commission E, fresh radish juice (50 - 100 mL) is effective against "peptic disorders, dyskinesia of bile ducts and catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract". For medicinal use, black radish (R. sativus var. niger) is preferred.
Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+ (horseradish and radish).
Preparation and Dosage: Fresh root (20 g per day) are taken or preparations containing 2% mustard oil are applied externally. Freeze-dried root or extracts are sometimes used.
Horseradish is a perennial herb native to Russia that's now widely grown. One of the five bitter herbs of the Jewish Passover feast, horseradish is a member of the mustard family. The white, fleshy root is the part used medicinally, and is the source of the fiery wasabi of Japanese cuisine.
Potential Health Benefits
Horseradish loosens catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract when used either internally or externally. Used internally, it's also a treatment for urinary tract infection. Used externally, it can soothe minor muscle aches and pains.
Scientific Evidence
The herb contains mustard oil and mustard oil glycodiden. It kills or limits the growth of bacteria and can bring increased concentration of blood when applied to the skin. In animal studies, horseradish has relieved muscle spasms.
