Though sounding like one of a pair of well known operas ("Arm and Pag") this is in fact the ubiquitous horseradish. At least it would be ubiquitous if it had its own way. Like a huge green dock, its waved leaves springing from the soil are an inevitable haunt of garden snails. A clump once introduced to a collection of more restrained herbs is extremely difficult to get rid of except on the driest soils which it resents.
Anyone who is not perfectly happy with those admirable little pots of proprietory horseradish sauce to accompany their smoked trout or roast beef would be well advised to grow the plant in a corner of the garden wanted for nothing else. A variegated form is more acceptable.
How to Use the Herb
Watch out: Hot! Used at the recommended doses, however, horseradish can do more than torch the inside of your mouth. For internal use, the average daily dose is 20 grams of fresh root or equivalent preparation. For external use, preparations with a minimum 2 percent mustard oil.

Stir 1/4 of a teaspoon into a glass of water and consume 3 times daily, with meals.
