Description
Widely grown in southeastern Europe, the European version of horse chestnut is a tall tree, called horse chestnut because the crushed nut is added to horse feed. The American variety is common in Ohio, where it's called buckeye. The seeds. are peeled, mashed, and pulped for medical use.
Potential Health Benefits
Extract from the seed was reviewed and approved by Commission E for chronic venous insufficiency and pathological conditions of the veins of the legs. Horse chestnut seed can stop swelling of the legs, cramps in the calves, and pain and feeling of heaviness in the legs. (The flowers, bark, and other plant parts weren't specifically endorsed.)
Scientific Evidence
The active ingredient in horse chestnut seed is aescin (also spelled escin). It tightens up the walls of the capillaries, helping to prevent blood leakage, and reduces the activity of lyposomal enzymes implicated in causing problems in the veins of the legs. In a 1996 German study, test subjects with varicose veins who took 50 millgrams of aescin per day achieved as much reduction in their legs as people wearing compression stockings who didn't take supplements.

Cautions
Discontinue use if you experience itching or nausea.
The PDR Family Guide to Natural Medicines & Healing Therapies cautions that high doses can cause enlarged pupils, unconsciousness, and other alarming conditions. Prevention magazine's book Nature's Medicines warns that horse chestnut seeds can interfere with the blood-thinner wafarin (Coumadin).
Traditionally, the unprocessed nut has been considered toxic. However, Commission E finds no known contraindications or drug interactions. It concludes that "pruritis, nausea and gastric complaints may occur in isolated cases after oral intake."
