Gymnema sylvestre, also called gurmar (Hindi name meaning "sugar taste destroyer"), is used for blocking sugar cravings, for diabetes, and for weight control and obesity. The sweetish and slightly sour leaves affect the spleen and pancreas. Gymnema possesses digestive, tonic, astringent, refrigerant, and diuretic properties. In terms of the biochemical composition, the herb contains gymnemic acid, (which may be a glucoside that has antisaccharine properties), bitter neutral principle, albuminous and coloring matters, calcium oxalate, parabin, glucose, carbohydrates, and some tartaric acid.
Gymnema has the unique property of inhibiting the taste of sugar. Because it has molecular structure similar to that of sugar, it blocks up to 50% of the absorption of sugar. In doing so, it will not effect the taste of food but will suppress the desire for sweets. This makes it an ideal herb to use for the treatment of diabetes along with the Ayurvedic mineral compound called shilajit and/or in combination with GTF chromium to help stabilize blood sugar.
To experience its effects, first taste something sweet, then swish gymnema tea in the mouth for 20-30 seconds and taste something sweet again. You will find that the gymnema has blocked the perception of sweetness in the mouth and may therefore block the absorption of sweet in the digestive system, although this is not fully known. As an antidiabetic herb, gyrnnema apparently works by enhancing the endogenous production of insulin. It is therefore a good herb to take after indulging in sweets to block sugar absorption in those with either type I and type II diabetes.
As a result, gymnema can treat of a wide variety of digestive diseases and diseases resulting from the use of sugar, such as hyperactivity, allergies, anemia, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, urinary tract infections, and hypoglycemia. Gymnema is a regulator and will exert its blood sugar-lowering effects only in cases of diabetes.
Dosage: At least 400 milligrams of gymnema extract per day for those with either type I or type II diabetes.
