Description
As ancient as the tall tropical trees that produce them and as modern as the mouthwash Lavoris - which contains their oil - cloves are among the most popular herbs. Known for their instantly recognizable and powerful smell, cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree, grown commercially in Tanzania, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. The essential oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and fruit.
Potential Health Benefits
Cloves' medicinal qualities are nearly as powerful as their smell. Undiluted oil of cloves is used as a local anesthetic in dentistry; at 1-5 percent essential oil, it's a cleansing mouthwash. Cloves also kill microbes in the mouth.
Scientific Evidence
The powdered and whole herb contain at least 14 percent essential oil. The oil is high in eugenol, which has antifungal and anti-septic qualities. Commission E additionally identifies antibacterial, antiviral, and antispasmotic properties in constituents of the oil. Studies of cloves published in such journals as Planta Medica in recent years underscore clove's ability to kill microbes and combat fungi and bacteria. In a report by U.S. scientists to the Food and Drug Administration, clove oil was singled out as the most effective active ingredient in commercial toothache remedies.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
