Description
General Herb Information
Bedstraw (Cleavers) - (Yellow Bedstraw (Galium verum), also called Our Lady's Bedstraw or Cheese Rennet; White Bedstraw (G. Molluyo), also called False Baby's Breath or Wild Madder. Both very decorative garden plants.
Propagation: by fresh seed in autumn; by root division in spring into small clumps because plant spreads readily by underground running roots; by layering.
Nature of Plant: Yellow variety especially beautiful for borders or rock gardens, rises to 3 feet topped by butter-yellow panicles of flowers; white variety 2 3/2 feet, blooms 2 weeks earlier than yellow, has wider, softer leaves and more brittle stems than yellow; both useful for softening effects in flower arrangements; dried stems resemble straw; formerly used for mattresses.
Spacing of Mature Plants: 2 feet.
Cultural Requirements: Dry, sandy soil in sunny spot; both varieties have weak stems and start to shoot up the second year and must be staked in a clump as soon as they are a foot high; use several stakes and a cord or raffia hoop to avoid spoiling the graceful effect of the clump; a higher hoop will be required when the growth reaches 3 feet.
Uses (Both varieties)
Root: (Industrial) As a red dye.
Stem and Leaf: (Household) Curdling milk for cheese, decoction for soothing foot bath; (Medicinal) in epilepsy, skin diseases, gentle laxative.
Flower: (Household) For coloring cheese and butter yellow.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
