Description
Medicinal Usage
Herbalists, today as in the past, have claimed medicinal virtues for the plant, too. They prescribe a tea made from the entire plant for kidney stones and bladder problems. Used as a wash, or lotion, the tea is said to fade freckles and sunburn as well as to treat psoriasis. The roots have been used, too. Dried and powdered, they are sprinkled on wounds to halt bleeding and promote healing.
Old-time herbalists concocted a soup consisting of cleavers, mutton, and sometimes oatmeal as an aid to dieting, perhaps because cleavers was believed to be a powerful diuretic. The shoots, rich in vitamin C, were once given as a spring tonic and a cure for scurvy.
Cleavers is known to modern herbalists as a remedy for vitamin C deficiency as well as for urinary and skin problems, but research has not substantiated its value as a diuretic or claims that it combats psoriasis.
General Herb Information
As a member of the madder family, cleavers is a relative of coffee. Cleavers seeds, lightly roasted, make a caffeine-free coffee substitute.
Cleavers can be hard to spot. It hides in thickets and woods, clinging in dense mats to nearby plants by means of bristles on its stem and leaves. Its white flowers produce bristly fruits that hitch a ride on passing animals. These clinging habits have earned the plant the names cleavers and catchweed. Many farm animals, including geese, relish the plant - a fact that accounts for the name goose grass.
Habitat: Moist, rich loamy soils in woods, hedgerows, and thickets.
Range: A native of Eurasia and North America, cleavers grows throughout the United States.
Identification: A weak-stemmed sprawling annual that forms dense, prickly mats over nearby plants. The square bristly stem, 1-5 feet high, bears whorls of prickly lance-shaped leaves. Small white flowers (May-June) produce tiny bristled fruits about 1/8 inch across.
Uses: The seeds can be roasted and made into an ersatz coffee, and the dried plant is used as a tea substitute in some parts of the world. The cooked shoots and young plants make a nourishing vegetable dish. A red dye can be extracted from the root.
