Carrots were recommended for anaemia, kidney complaints, and liver and bowel disorders. The juice of the root was used to kill intestinal worms. Applied externally as a poultice, the pulped root soothed itchy skin and alleviated the pain of sores and ulcers. Eating carrots was traditionally said to be good for the eyes, especially for the improvement of night vision.
Culinary Usage
The cultivated variety of carrot was used raw in salads or cooked as a vegetable. A drink was made from raw carrot juice.
Miscellaneous
Although carrots were eaten as a vegetable by the Greeks and the Romans, they were not cultivated in Britain until medieval times. Botanists have argued that medieval carrots were purple, or almost black, yet an illustration in the twelfth-century herbal of Bury St. Edmunds Abbey depicts the vegetable with an orange root. Wild carrots, listed by Aelfric, are still found in the hedgerows of Britain.
CARROT (Daucus carota) is a member of the celery family of Eurasian origin. In ancient Greece it was called Philon, from the Greek philo - loving. Its root was served as a vegetable before amatory affairs because it was believed to possess the power of exciting the passions. It was also believed that raw carrots improve the eyesight.
