Description

The bitter, acrid leaves of the mugwort plant affect the spleen, the liver, and the kidneys. In terms of pharmacological activity, this herb can be described as a cholagogue, a vermifuge, an emmenagogue, a hemostatic, an antispasmodic, a diaphoretic, a mild narcotic, or a bitter tonic. The biochemical makeup of mugwort includes essential oil, cineole, thujone, and bitter principle. Traditional uses in natural medicine include liver ailments, stomach and intestinal problems, and worms. Mugwort may also be use to promote menses, calm nervousness, or for ritual purification.

Mugwort is an excellent nervine for uncontrollable shaking, nervousness and insomnia. It may be taken as a tea, using an ounce of the herb to a pint of water steeped twenty minutes. The dose is one tablespoon three times daily. Mugwort can also be smoked, filling the lungs three to six times.

The tea or alcoholic tincture is used for treating liver and stomach disorders, and for this purpose it is diluted three times to help overcome the strong bitter taste. (It may be taken hot to induce sweating.) The tea was used by the Native Americans for colds and flus, bronchitis and fevers.

Mugwort has strong emmenagogic properties and can be used to help induce menses. As such, it can be combined with other herbs such as cramp bark for the treatment of menstrual cramps. It should be avoided during pregnancy.

The Chinese dry and render into a cottony mass a species of mugwort that is then burned directly on the skin in a therapeutic technique called moxabustion. Mugwort is ideally suited for this because of its cottonlike consistency and also because its volatile oils help promote blood circulation, relax the underlying nerves and burn quickly at a low temperature.

Usually anywhere from three or more small red-bean-sized cones are rolled into a pyramid shape and lit with an incense stick and allowed to bum down to the skin. This powerfully stimulates the immune system and associated meridians or nervous system depending upon the acupuncture point selected.

It is specifically indicated for all conditions associated with coldness and deficiency and as such has a better effect than the use of needles. A common alternative to the direct burning on the skin is to roll the moxa into a cigar shape and lighting one end, pass it in a clockwise motion over a specific point or area until it becomes hot. This is repeated several times and is effective in removing chronic cold spasms and pains including the pains of injuries.

The ash of mugwort or wormwood can be applied topically or drunk internally to stop hemorrhage and bleeding.

The crumpled dried leaves are ritualistically burned in a large seashell by Native Americans to "smudge" or purify bad spirits.

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) has similar properties and the tincture can be taken three times daily when traveling to tropical countries to prevent malaria. It can also be taken as a bitter stomachic, like mugwort, and used for stomach and intestinal complaints including worms and parasites.
