Description
The Christmas kissing plant has a long but controversial history in medicine, owing to its potential toxicity In Europe, the plant's leaves and flowers are used medically, and mistletoe tea is entrenched in folk medicine. Commission E studied European mistletoe, which is similar to the North American variety. Both are parasitic shrubs that grow in the branches of trees. Mistletoe is gathered from the wild.
Potential Health Benefits
Commission E considers mistletoe a serious drug, to be used carefully and under medical supervision. Mistletoe preparations are injected to treat degenerative inflammation of the joint: that is, rheumatoid arthritis. In Germany, mistletoe extract is also used as an anticancer drug (a use that hasn't been approved in the U.S.), and to lower blood pressure.
Scientific Evidence
Commission E doesn't cite scientific studies in its approval of mistletoe. Instead, its endorsement is drawn from the experience using mistletoe as part of German medical practice.
How to Use the Herb
Commission E approves fresh plant or cut and powdered herb for injections, but doesn't specify dose levels, perhaps to discourage consumers from using the drug on their own.
American herbal writer Varro E. Tyler, Ph.D., flatly declares that "Mistletoe as a home remedy or as a beverage should definitely be avoided."

How helpful is mistletoe in curing cancer?

According to the National Cancer Institute, mistletoe extract killed cancer cells in laboratory studies, and it may alleviate symptoms of standard anticancer therapies. The Institute also claims that human clinical trials performed in Europe have yielded "unclear results" while American studies are still in progress.
In a 2005 study, mistletoe extract has been shown to reduce tumour recurrence in bladder cancer. The study concluded that standardized extract could be "potential alternative adjuvant therapy for superficial bladder cancer". While more research is required to further understand the scope of the cancer-fighting abilities of mistltoe extract, the results to date are very positive. While mistletoe, or any herbal extract for that matter, cannot be labelled a "cure" for cancer, it would be sensible to make it part of a cancer treatment program.
Directions
Take 1 capsule, 3 times daily, with meals.
Cautions
Not recommended if you are, or think you may be, pregnant.
The berries are considered toxic, especially for small children, by most authorities. Commission E doesn't comment on the berries, specifically, but does recommend caution when using mistletoe preparations. The commission notes that injections can cause swelling.
Side effects can include "chills, high fever, headaches, angina, orthostatic circulatory disturbances and allergic reactions." Pregnant women shouldn't use mistletoe, and neither should people with "chronic-progressive infections," such as tuberculosis or AIDS.
