Description
Medicinal Usage
Carminative, diaphoretic, antispasmodic, and diuretic properties have been attributed to marjoram. In laboratory experiments, extracts of marjoram have been reported to inhibit herpes simplex. The oil has been used for toothache, and marjoram was once used for cancer.
The essential oil contains terpinenes, sabinene, linalool, carvacrol, cis-sabinene hydrate, trans-sabinene hydrate and over forty other components. Cis-sabinene hydrate is responsible for sweet marjoram's typical fragrance. The leaves contain up to 13 percent protein and are high in vitamins A and C.
General Herb Information
Marjoram is a tender, bushy perennial which must be grown as an annual in most parts of the United States. It reaches a height of two feet and is smooth or hairy. The leaves are one-fourth to one inch long, oval, entire, with short petioles on the lower leaves, and sessile upper leaves. The veins are somewhat raised. The spikelets are borne in terminal panicles on short branches. Each spikelet is one-fourth to one-half inch long. The bracts are small, rounded, and glistening with oil glands. The calyx has one lip with a deep slot down one side. One-eighth-inch long flowers are white, pale lilac or pink. Marjoram, native to north Africa and southwest Asia, and naturalized in southern Europe, blooms in late summer.
Marjoram is easily propagated by seeds sown in the spring or by summer cuttings. Winter indoors in pots and replant in spring after danger of frost has passed.
A light, fairly rich, well-drained, slightly alkaline soil (pH 7 to 8) in full sun is favorable.
Harvest as soon as blooming commences. It dries easily.
Marjoram is sweeter, somewhat more piquant than oregano. It's great with tomato dishes, meats, onions, brussels sprouts, and mushrooms, and is a pleas- ant surprise in salads.

The essence of the current American rule on Traditional Uses is, as stated by FTC, "Claims based on historical or traditional use should be substantiated by confirming scientific evidence, or should be presented in such a way that consumers understand that the sole basis for the claim is a history of use of the product for a particular purpose."
