Description
Among the many exotic fruits and vegetables which have joined the supermarket shelves in recent years is the shiitake mushroom - favored by many because it has a more exotic flavor than the familiar cultivated button and cap mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus). It is also an important medicinal plant with an impressive list of actions now identified by modern research.
Extracts of Shiitake mushroom have been used in Japan to help support patients undergoing chemotherapy and it has been shown to reduce the growth rate of liver tumors; in the USA it has been used for AIDS sufferers and is believed to improve the immune and endocrine function in the elderly.
The mushroom has featured in traditional Chinese medicine for at least 2,000 years although "Shiitake" is actually the Japanese name - the Chinese call it Xiang Gu. It was regarded as restoring and stimulating and used as a gentle tonic.
Given their array of properties, it is well worth making shiitake mushrooms part of a regular diet: they can be especially helpful in colds and influenza to help combat the viral infection and strengthen the immune system and they can also be useful in candidiasis (contrary to some advice to avoid eating fungi when suffering from yeast infections). Many nutritionists also consider them as a useful addition to anti-cancer diets.
In traditional Chinese medicine the typical dose was 6-16 g of dried mushroom or 90 g of fresh taken in a soup up to three times a day. That sort of quantity may be ideal for combating acute colds but for regular therapeutic use could well result in gastric upsets. A single daily serving would be more suitable for general use.
Commercial extracts concentrating the active ingredients of shiitake are becoming more widely available.
