Shepherds purse takes its name from the heart-shaped seed pods which were thought to resemble the leather pouches once carried by shepherds. These same seed pods account for another of its country names mother's hearts, and the plant (like others with "mother's" or "lady's" as part of their name) is a valuable gynaecological remedy helpful for menstrual irregularities and recommended as a tea in childbirth to encourage contractions and ease labor pains.
The herb can be eaten in salads, added to sandwiches and was once gathered and cooked as a spring vegetable: it has a pleasant, spicy flavor.
As well as having astringent and styptic properties, shepherd's purse is a urinary antiseptic and diuretic, so can be helpful in cystitis. It is especially suitable in severe cases where there is blood in the urine. Drinking the tea may help relieve heavy periods, while its astringency can also be helpful for chronic diarrhoea and in colitis.
The plant is also used in traditional Chinese medicine as an astringent styptic and wound healer; while the seeds are believed to help improve the eyesight. It has also been used to reduce fevers in malaria.
